DeepSeek “Server busy”: what it means and how to fix it
Quick answer: “Server busy” means DeepSeek's servers are overloaded by high traffic. It isn't caused by your device or account. Wait a short while and try again. If it goes on for a long time, check the live status below and DeepSeek's status page.

Live status, updated every minute. If it says “No problems”, the cause is most likely on your side: follow the steps below.
Why DeepSeek gets busy
DeepSeek's documentation describes its 503 error simply: the server is overloaded due to high traffic. The chat app's “server busy” message is the same situation from a user's point of view. It tends to come in waves at peak times and usually passes within minutes.
If the live status above shows problems, or DeepSeek has posted an incident, it's a wider outage rather than a brief busy spell.
Fixes for the DeepSeek chat
- Wait a minute, then resendBusy messages are usually short-lived. Resending straight away rarely helps; a short pause usually does.
- Try without search or deep thinkingDeepSeek lists its search service separately from chat. If a question fails with web search or the reasoning mode on, try it with them off.
- Start a new chatLong conversations with big uploads take more work. A fresh chat with just what's needed is more likely to go through.
- Switch between app and websiteIf chat.deepseek.com keeps failing, try the phone app, or the other way round.
- Rule out your networkSome organisations and countries restrict DeepSeek. If it never works on one network but does on mobile data, it's being blocked there rather than being busy.
For developers: DeepSeek API errors
DeepSeek's API error documentation lists these, with its recommended fixes:
- 503 Server Overloaded: high traffic. Retry after a brief wait.
- 429 Rate Limit Reached: requests too fast, or a concurrency or QPS limit. Pace your requests.
- 500 Server Error: a problem on DeepSeek's side. Retry after a brief wait; contact DeepSeek if it continues.
- 402 Insufficient Balance: your account has run out of balance. Top up to continue; retrying won't help.
- 401 Authentication Fails: the API key is wrong. Check your key.
Questions
How long does DeepSeek's “server busy” last?
Usually a few minutes at a time, often during peak hours. If it lasts much longer, check the live status above for a wider outage.
Is “server busy” the same as DeepSeek being down?
Not exactly. It means the servers are overloaded, so some requests fail while others succeed. A full outage shows up as constant failures and in our status verdict.
Does paying for the API avoid busy errors?
The API has its own overload (503) and rate-limit (429) errors too. DeepSeek's advice for 503 is to retry after a brief wait.
