AI error messages explained

What common ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, OpenAI API and DeepSeek errors actually mean, whether it's an outage or just you, and how to fix them. Each guide shows the live status of the service and is based on the provider's own documentation.

ChatGPT

  • ChatGPT “Something went wrong”
ChatGPT saying “Something went wrong” or “There was an error generating a response”? Check live ChatGPT status, then try these fixes in order.
  • ChatGPT “A network error occurred”
ChatGPT showing “A network error occurred” or a websocket error? Your device can't keep a steady connection to OpenAI. Live status and fixes that work.

OpenAI API

  • OpenAI API error 429
Getting a 429 from the OpenAI API? It's a rate limit, an empty credit balance or a spend limit. How to tell which one, and the right fix for each.
  • OpenAI API 500 and 503 errors
OpenAI API returning 500 or 503? These are server-side errors: a processing failure or a model short of capacity. Live API status and how to handle them.

Claude

  • Claude “usage limit reached”
Hit Claude's usage limit? It's your plan's limit, not an outage. How the 5-hour session and weekly limits work, what uses them up fastest, and your options.

Anthropic API

  • Claude 529 “Overloaded” error
Seeing Claude's 529 overloaded_error? Anthropic's API is temporarily over capacity. Live Claude status, why it happens and how to retry the right way.

Gemini

  • Gemini API 429 RESOURCE_EXHAUSTED
Gemini API returning 429 RESOURCE_EXHAUSTED? You've hit a per-minute rate limit or your daily quota. How to tell which, and how to retry correctly.

DeepSeek

  • DeepSeek “Server busy”
DeepSeek saying the server is busy? Its servers are overloaded by high traffic. Live DeepSeek status, fixes for the chat app, and what API errors 503 and 429 mean.
