Anthropic API error 429 (rate_limit_error): what it means and how to fix it

Quick answer: A 429 from the Anthropic API means your organisation hit a rate limit or a spend cap. It isn't an outage, and it's different from 529 “overloaded”, which is Anthropic's side. A rate limit clears by itself if you slow down; a spend cap keeps failing until the cap is raised or the month resets.

The message you're seeing

  • 429 rate_limit_error
  • enforced_spend_limit_reached

Is it down right now?

Live status, updated every minute. If it says “No problems”, the cause is most likely on your side: follow the steps below.

Which kind of 429 is it?

Anthropic's error documentation says a 429 means one of three things: your organisation hit a rate limit, reached its usage tier's monthly spend cap, or reached a spend limit on the Claude Code workspace.

  • Rate limit: the response usually includes a retry-after header telling you how many seconds to wait.
  • Spend cap: the error code is enforced_spend_limit_reached and there's no retry-after header, because waiting a few seconds won't help.

Fixing a rate-limit 429

  1. Wait as long as retry-after saysAnthropic's rate-limit docs say that when the response has a retry-after header, you should wait that many seconds before retrying.
  2. Ramp up graduallySudden jumps in traffic can trigger limits. Anthropic recommends increasing traffic gradually and keeping usage patterns consistent.
  3. Use prompt cachingOnly uncached input tokens count towards input-tokens-per-minute limits, so caching repeated context lets you send more.
  4. Ask for a higher tierIf you regularly need more, request a tier increase from the Rate limits page in the Claude Console.

Fixing a spend-cap 429

Each usage tier has a monthly spend cap ($500 on Start, $1,000 on Build, $200,000 on Scale). Once it's reached, usage pauses until 00:00 UTC on the first day of the next month, unless the cap is raised or you move up a tier.

Questions

What's the difference between Anthropic errors 429 and 529?

429 is about your own organisation's limits. 529 “overloaded_error” means Anthropic's API is temporarily overloaded, which isn't caused by you. Check the live status above for 529s.

Do Anthropic rate limits reset every minute?

Not at fixed times. Anthropic uses a token bucket: your capacity refills continuously up to your maximum, rather than resetting all at once.

Will retrying fix enforced_spend_limit_reached?

No. That error has no retry-after header because it won't clear by waiting a few seconds. Raise the spend cap, move up a tier, or wait for the next month.
