Not working for you? Try this
- Read the error typeAnthropic's errors name the problem. authentication_error (401) means a missing or bad API key. permission_error (403) means your key can't use that resource. rate_limit_error (429) means you've hit a rate limit. api_error (500) is an unexpected error on Anthropic's side. overloaded_error (529) means the API is temporarily overloaded.
- Treat 529 'overloaded' as temporaryOverloaded errors happen at traffic peaks and usually clear within minutes. Retry with a growing delay and some randomness rather than immediately. The official SDKs already retry some of these errors for you.
- Check rate limits and credit429 responses include headers that say which limit you hit and when it resets. If your account runs out of credit, requests are refused with a message saying so; add credit in the Claude Console.
- Check the model nameA not_found_error (404) often means a misspelled model name or one that has been retired. Compare it with the current model list in Anthropic's documentation.
- Stream long answersBig requests can take a while. Use streaming for long outputs so your HTTP client doesn't time out a request that is still working.
- Test in the ConsoleTry the same model and prompt in the Claude Console. If it works there but not in your app, the problem is in your code, key or network, not the API.

Questions about Anthropic API outages
What does error 529 from the Anthropic API mean?
It means the API is temporarily overloaded. It's usually short-lived. Retry with exponential backoff, and check this page: if many 529s line up with an official incident, it's a wider problem.
If claude.ai is down, is the API down too?
Not necessarily. Anthropic lists claude.ai and the API separately, and they often have problems at different times.
Why does your check get a 401 from api.anthropic.com?
We check the API without a key, so it answers 'unauthorised'. That still proves it's reachable. We never send paid requests.
