ChatGPT “A network error occurred”: causes and fixes
Quick answer: These errors mean your device couldn't keep a reliable connection to ChatGPT's servers. It's usually something between you and OpenAI, such as a VPN, a proxy, a security filter or an unstable network, but it can also appear during an outage. Check the live status below, then try the fixes.
The message you're seeing
A network error occurred. An error occurred while connecting to the websocket.
Is it down right now?
- ChatGPT · checked No problems
Live status, updated every minute. If it says “No problems”, the cause is most likely on your side: follow the steps below.
What causes it
ChatGPT streams its answers over a connection that has to stay open while the reply is written. Anything that interrupts or filters that connection can end it early: VPNs and proxies, security tools that inspect web traffic, strict work or school firewalls, and patchy Wi‑Fi or mobile signal.
If the live status above shows problems with ChatGPT, many people will be getting network errors at once and there's nothing to fix on your side. Wait and try again.
Fixes that work
- Turn off your VPN or proxyOpenAI lists this first. Even reliable VPNs can drop long-running connections.
- Switch off web security filtersTools such as Web Protect, or antivirus web shields, can interrupt ChatGPT's connection. Pause them briefly to test.
- Try another browser or a private windowThis rules out extensions and old site data in one step.
- Change networkSwitch between Wi‑Fi and mobile data, or try another network. Work and school networks often filter this kind of connection.
- Ask for shorter answersIf the error only appears on very long replies, ask ChatGPT to answer in parts, so each reply finishes faster.
Seeing “Unusual activity detected” too?
That's a different message. OpenAI shows it when traffic looks automated or unusual, often because a VPN or proxy shares its address with many other users. Turning off the VPN usually fixes it. OpenAI also advises not sharing your account and changing your password if you're unsure.
Questions
Is “A network error occurred” my internet or ChatGPT?
Usually your connection or something filtering it, such as a VPN or security tool. If the live status above shows ChatGPT problems, it's on OpenAI's side.
Why does it happen in the middle of a long answer?
Long answers keep the connection open longer, so there's more time for a VPN, firewall or weak signal to interrupt it. Asking for the answer in parts can help.
What does the websocket error mean?
It's the same problem: ChatGPT couldn't set up or keep the live connection it uses to send replies. The same fixes apply.
