- See whether only one feature is affectedOpenAI lists parts of ChatGPT separately: conversations, voice mode, image generation, file uploads, search and more. If the official list on this page shows only one of them with problems, the rest of ChatGPT usually still works.
- Reload, then try a new chatA reply that stops halfway or ends in an error often works after a page reload. If one long conversation keeps failing, start a new chat. Very long chats with many files are more likely to hit errors.
- Rule out a usage limitA message saying you've reached your limit for a model or feature is a limit on your account, not an outage. It usually tells you when you can use it again, and you can often switch to another model in the meantime.
- Try a private window or the other appOpen chatgpt.com in a private (incognito) window. If it works there, a browser extension or old stored data is to blame: switch off extensions such as ad blockers or privacy add-ons, or clear site data for chatgpt.com. Trying the phone app instead of the website (or the reverse) tells you the same thing.
- Check your networkWork, school and public Wi‑Fi networks sometimes block or slow ChatGPT. Try mobile data. If you use a VPN or proxy, switch it off for a moment, because shared VPN addresses can trigger extra security checks.
- Sign out and back inIf ChatGPT keeps asking you to log in or shows an authentication error, sign out fully, close the tab, then sign in again with the same method you used before (email, Google, Apple or Microsoft).

Is ChatGPT down for everyone or just me?
Look at the verdict at the top of this page. If it says No problems and few visitors are reporting issues, the cause is most likely on your side, so work through the steps above. If OpenAI's status page or lots of visitors report problems, it's a wider outage and the only fix is to wait.
Why does OpenAI's status page say everything is fine when ChatGPT isn't working?
Official status pages are updated by people, so they can lag a few minutes behind the start of a problem. Some problems also hit only certain regions, accounts or features. That's why we show our own checks and visitor reports next to the official status.
If ChatGPT is down, is the OpenAI API down too?
Not necessarily. OpenAI lists the ChatGPT apps and the API for developers separately, and one can have problems while the other works. The OpenAI API has its own page on this site.
Will a VPN fix ChatGPT being down?
No. If ChatGPT is down for everyone, a VPN can't fix it. A VPN can occasionally help when your own internet provider has a routing problem, but it can also cause extra security checks on ChatGPT.
How will I know when ChatGPT is back?
Keep this page open. It updates every minute, and the verdict at the top changes back to No problems once OpenAI's status page and our checks look normal again.
