Claude “usage limit reached”: when it resets and what you can do
Quick answer: This is a limit on your plan, not an outage. On paid plans Claude has a session limit that resets every five hours and weekly limits that reset once a week. You can wait for the reset, make your usage go further, upgrade, or turn on usage credits to keep going.

How Claude's usage limits work
According to Anthropic's help centre, paid plans have two kinds of limit: a session limit that resets every five hours, and weekly limits that reset once a week. The message you see tells you when you can carry on.
One detail surprises many people: claude.ai, Claude Code and Claude Desktop all count towards the same limit. A long coding session in Claude Code can use up the allowance you were planning to use in chat.
- Conversation length and complexity: longer conversations use more, especially once Claude starts managing a very long context automatically.
- Model and effort: more capable models and higher effort levels use more of your limit.
- Tools and connectors: Anthropic describes these as token-intensive.
Usage limit, or is Claude down?
If the message mentions your limit and a reset time, it's your limit and nothing is broken. If instead every message fails, claude.ai won't load, or Claude says it's overloaded or busy, that's a service problem: check the live status above.
How to make your limit go further
- Start new chatsBegin a fresh conversation for each new task instead of continuing one very long chat. Paste in only the context Claude needs.
- Switch off tools you're not usingConnectors and tools add a lot of usage. Turn off the ones a task doesn't need.
- Match the model to the jobUse a lighter model or a lower effort setting for quick questions, and keep the most capable options for hard work.
- Remember Claude Code shares the poolIf you also use Claude Code, plan heavy coding sessions so they don't use up the limit you need for chat.
Your options when you hit the limit
- Wait: the session limit resets every five hours; weekly limits reset once a week.
- Upgrade: Anthropic says a new plan's limits apply straight away.
- Usage credits: if you turn them on, your work continues on credits instead of stopping.
