- Usage limit or outage?If Claude says you've reached a usage limit, that's a limit on your plan, not an outage. The message tells you when it resets. An outage usually shows up as errors on every message, or claude.ai not loading at all.
- Wait a minute if Claude says it's busyAt very busy times Claude may say it's overloaded or that it couldn't finish a reply. Wait a minute and press retry. This can happen without any official incident.
- Start a fresh conversationVery long chats with many files take more work to process and are more likely to fail. Start a new chat and paste in only what you need.
- Try a private window or the appOpen claude.ai in a private window or another browser. If it works there, clear site data for claude.ai or switch off extensions. The Claude desktop and phone apps are another quick test.
- Check your networkSome company networks, school filters and VPNs block or interfere with claude.ai. Try mobile data, or switch the VPN off briefly.
- Claude Code not responding?Claude Code relies on the same Anthropic services. Check the Claude Code line in the official components on this page. If it's fine, update Claude Code to the latest version and sign in again.

Is claude.ai down if the Anthropic API is working?
It can be. Anthropic lists claude.ai and the Claude API separately, and one can have problems while the other works. The Anthropic API has its own page on this site.
Why does Claude say I've hit a limit when nothing is down?
Every Claude plan has usage limits that reset over time. Long chats and big files use up your allowance faster. That message is about your account, not an outage.
