1. Look at the Copilot log in your editorIn VS Code, open the Output panel and choose GitHub Copilot or GitHub Copilot Chat from the list. Errors there usually name the cause: sign-in, network or a server problem.
2. Sign out of GitHub in your editor and back inExpired or mixed-up GitHub sign-ins are the most common cause of Copilot suddenly stopping. Make sure you're signed in with the GitHub account that has Copilot.
3. Check your plan's limitsCopilot plans have monthly allowances for some features and models. Once you've used an allowance, those requests are refused until it resets or you choose another model. That's not an outage.
4. Switch to a different modelCopilot uses AI models from several companies. GitHub lists 'Copilot AI Model Providers' separately on its status page. If one provider has problems, choosing another model in Copilot Chat often works straight away.
5. Check firewalls and proxiesCopilot needs to reach GitHub's Copilot servers. Company networks, proxies and security software can block them. GitHub's Copilot documentation lists the addresses your network must allow.
6. Update the extension and your editorOld versions of the Copilot extension can stop working when GitHub changes its service. Update both, then restart the editor.

Why does your check get a 404 from api.githubcopilot.com?

We contact the Copilot API without signing in and without asking for anything specific, so it answers 'not found'. That answer still shows the server is reachable.
