GitHub Copilot usage limits

Every fact below links to GitHub's own pages. Last verified against them on 3 November 2026.

Is it a limit, or is GitHub Copilot down? GitHub Copilot right now: No problems checked · live status · outage history

Since 1 June 2026, GitHub Copilot measures usage in GitHub AI Credits instead of premium requests. Each plan gets a monthly allowance, and it resets at the same moment for everyone: midnight UTC on the 1st of the month. Here's what GitHub's own docs say.

How GitHub Copilot limits work

  • Premium requests were replaced by usage-based billing on 1 June 2026. source
  • Usage is counted in AI credits; one credit is worth one US cent. source
  • Code completions and next edit suggestions don't use credits and are unlimited on all paid plans. source
  • Unused credits don't carry over to the next month. source

Limits by plan

Free

$0 source

  • 2,000 code completions a month. source
  • Limited chat and agent use, with models chosen automatically. GitHub doesn't say how many credits Free gets. source

Pro

$10 a month source

  • 1,000 base credits plus a 500-credit flexible top-up each month (1,500 in total). The flexible part can change over time. source

Pro+

$39 a month source

  • 3,900 base credits plus 3,100 flexible (7,000 in total) each month. source

Max

$100 a month source

  • 10,000 base credits plus 10,000 flexible (20,000 in total) each month. source

Business and Enterprise

Business $19 per user a month; Enterprise $39 per user a month source

  • Each user adds credits (1,900 on Business, 3,900 on Enterprise) to one shared pool for the organisation. source
  • Use beyond the pool costs $0.01 per credit, and extra usage is switched on by default. source

What happens when you hit a limit

  • On personal plans, you can set a budget for extra usage to keep going, or wait for the monthly reset. source
  • Base credits are used first, then the flexible top-up. source
  • In organisations that don't allow extra usage, credit-based features stop until the next monthly refresh. source
  • Short rate limits are temporary: waiting a moment and trying again usually works. source

When does my limit reset?

An estimate based on the provider's published rules, shown in your own time zone. Your app shows the exact time when you reach a limit. Nothing you enter is sent or saved.

  • The reset is the same for everyone and doesn't depend on when you subscribed. source

What GitHub's pages don't say

Where the official information is missing or vague, we say so rather than guess.

  • How many AI credits the Free and Student plans include. source
  • The size or length of short-term rate limits. source
  • The maximum for personal extra usage: GitHub only says it “may be capped”. source
