ChatGPT usage limits

Every fact below links to OpenAI's own pages. Last verified against them on 3 November 2026.

Is it a limit, or is ChatGPT down? ChatGPT right now: No problems checked · live status · outage history

OpenAI publishes exact numbers for some ChatGPT features, such as file uploads, voice and agent mode, but not for everyday messages or Thinking on most plans. ChatGPT tells you when a limit resets once you reach it. Here's what OpenAI's own pages say, plan by plan.

How ChatGPT limits work

  • On Free and Go, everyday text chats are unlimited, within safeguards against abuse. source
  • File uploads, image generation, voice, data analysis and other tools have their own separate limits. source
  • When you reach a limit, ChatGPT shows when it resets, where that information is available. source
  • From December 2026, Plus, Pro and Business will share one allowance across ChatGPT and Codex. Instant chat won't count against it. source

Limits by plan

Free

£0 source

  • Uses the GPT-5.6 Luna model, including for Think. source
  • 3 file uploads a day, which OpenAI may lower at peak times. source
  • When you hit a GPT limit, access pauses until it resets; ChatGPT shows when. source

Go

£7 a month (US $8) source

  • Unlimited everyday chats like Free, with higher limits for image generation, file uploads and data analysis. source
  • Doesn't include GPT-5.6 Sol. source

Plus

£20 a month (US $20) source

  • There may be message caps, especially at busy times, and they can vary. source
  • Up to 80 file uploads every 3 hours (this applies to all plans). source
  • Agent mode: 40 messages a month. source
  • Voice: 3 hours, measured over a rolling 24 hours. source

Pro

From £89 a month in the UK. In US dollars there are three tiers: $100, $200 and $500 a month. source

  • Pro doesn't include unlimited use of the GPT-6 Pro model. source
  • On Pro $200, when you reach the weekly GPT-6 Pro limit, ChatGPT switches to GPT-5.6 Thinking. source
  • Any “unlimited” access on Pro is subject to abuse guardrails. source
  • Agent mode: 400 messages a month. source

Business (formerly Team)

Standard seat £15 a month; Premium seat £75 a month (US: $25 / $125 monthly, $20 / $100 billed yearly) source

  • Instant chat is virtually unlimited, but reasoning, Pro, Codex and other tools are not. source
  • Pro model messages: 15 a month on Standard seats, 50 a week on Premium seats. source
  • Agent mode: 40 messages a month. source

Enterprise and Edu

Custom pricing source

  • Virtually unlimited messages on eligible base models, which still isn't free usage. source
  • Edu: 3 image generations per rolling 24 hours. source
  • Edu: 5 deep research queries per rolling 24 hours. source

What happens when you hit a limit

  • If you hit a Thinking limit, ChatGPT may carry on with another model. source
  • You can switch to another available model, or wait until the reset time ChatGPT shows. source
  • On Free, upgrading to Plus, Pro or Business resets your usage straight away. source
  • For Work and Codex limits, a paid reset restores both the five-hour and weekly allowance at once. source

When does my limit reset?

An estimate based on the provider's published rules, shown in your own time zone. Your app shows the exact time when you reach a limit. Nothing you enter is sent or saved.

  • Message and Thinking limits can't be calculated: OpenAI doesn't publish their windows. ChatGPT shows the reset time when you reach one. source

What OpenAI's pages don't say

Where the official information is missing or vague, we say so rather than guess.

  • Per-plan numbers for everyday messages, Thinking, image generation and deep research (except Edu). source
  • How many GPT-6 Pro messages a week each Pro tier includes. source
  • Voice on Go: the Go help page says it has the same limits as Free, but the voice page lists 3 hours for Go. source
  • The day and time weekly limits reset. source
  • The windows for the shared ChatGPT and Codex allowance that starts in December 2026. source
