Microsoft Copilot usage limits

Every fact below links to Microsoft's own pages. Last verified against them on 3 November 2026.

Is it a limit, or is Microsoft Copilot down? Microsoft Copilot right now: No problems checked · live status · outage history

Microsoft doesn't publish message or credit numbers for Copilot. Free use depends on available capacity, and Microsoft 365 plans get AI credits and feature limits described as “standard”, “more” or “extensive” usage. Here's what Microsoft's own pages say.

How Microsoft Copilot limits work

  • Free Copilot lets you chat, create images and upload files, subject to available capacity and limits. source
  • Microsoft 365 plans use two systems: some features can be used a set number of times in a period, others use monthly AI credits. source
  • AI credits are a monthly allowance. source
  • Limits can vary with the feature and system conditions, and may change as new models arrive. source

Limits by plan

  • A limited free version, subject to capacity. source
  • Deep Research was removed from the Copilot app on 18 August 2026. source

  • “Extensive usage” for chat, deep reasoning and Pages; “standard usage” for Audio Overviews, voice, vision and image generation (Microsoft's own wording). source
  • AI features are for the subscription owner only, not shared family members. source

Microsoft 365 Premium (replaced Copilot Pro)

  • Work accounts without a Copilot licence have fair-use limits on some features. source

What happens when you hit a limit

  • On free Copilot, you can upgrade or come back later. source
  • On Microsoft 365, a feature may be unavailable until your allowance resets. You get a notice as you get close. source
  • Check what's left in your Microsoft account under Services & subscriptions. source
  • Voice conversations can end automatically when a session limit is reached. source

When does my limit reset?

  • Resets can't be calculated: Microsoft says AI credits are monthly but doesn't say on which day, and doesn't give the period for feature limits. source

What Microsoft's pages don't say

Where the official information is missing or vague, we say so rather than guess.

  • Any numbers for messages, images, voice minutes or AI credits on free or Microsoft 365 plans. source
  • The day AI credits reset, and the time period for feature limits. source
  • How long you need to wait on free Copilot after hitting a limit. source
