Grok usage limits

Every fact below links to xAI's own pages. Last verified against them on 3 November 2026.

Is it a limit, or is Grok down? Grok right now: No problems checked · live status · outage history

Grok no longer has separate daily limits for chat, images and voice. Paid plans share one weekly usage pool, and bigger plans get a bigger pool. xAI publishes the pool sizes only as multiples, not as numbers of messages. Here's what xAI's own pages say.

How Grok limits work

  • Paid plans have one weekly pool shared by Chat, Imagine (images and video), Voice and the other Grok products, instead of daily limits for each. source
  • The pool resets every week, on a schedule shown in Settings > Usage. source
  • Different things use different amounts: a chat message uses little, a high-quality video or a long coding task uses far more. source
  • Grok is free to start; paid plans raise the limits. source

Limits by plan

Free

$0 source

  • Limited chat requests. xAI doesn't say how many. source

The X Subscription: Plus

$8 a month, or $80 a year (US prices, before VAT) source

  • The base weekly pool, which the bigger plans are measured against. source

The X Subscription: Premium

$30 a month, or $300 a year source

The X Subscription: Super

$100 a month, or $1,000 a year source

  • 15 times the Plus pool. source

The X Subscription: Ultra

$200 a month, or $2,000 a year source

  • 50 times the Plus pool. source
  • On team plans, each seat has its own weekly pool. source

Older plans: SuperGrok and X Premium

X Premium in the UK: £8 a month; Premium+ £31 a month source

  • Existing SuperGrok and X Premium subscriptions carry on; switching to The X Subscription is optional. source
  • SuperGrok uses the same shared weekly pool. source
  • X Premium and Premium+ only say “increased” or “higher” Grok limits, without numbers. source

Grok API (developers)

The xAI API is billed separately from the apps and has its own rate limits.

  • Each API team has per-model limits on requests per second and tokens per minute; going over returns a 429 error. source
  • Once you reach a rate-limit tier, you keep it. source

What happens when you hit a limit

  • When the weekly pool runs out, paid features pause until it resets. source
  • You can still use the free tier's Chat and Voice, which have their own separate limits. source
  • Or buy extra usage credits on the web, from $5. source
  • On The X Subscription, usage beyond the weekly pool is paid from top-up credits. source

When does my limit reset?

  • The weekly reset can't be calculated: xAI shows each account its own reset date and time in Settings > Usage. source

What xAI's pages don't say

Where the official information is missing or vague, we say so rather than guess.

  • How many messages the free tier allows, or how often it resets. source
  • How big the weekly pool is in messages, images or videos; only multiples of the Plus pool are given. source
  • UK prices for The X Subscription. xAI shows US dollars only, before VAT. source
  • Prices for SuperGrok and SuperGrok Heavy on any official page we could read. source
